How to keep your poster printing relevant
How are your creative skills when it comes to designing and printing a poster? Where do you begin and end? You might have already designed all sorts for yourself or for clients, but do you know what the attributes of a stunning and up-to-date poster are? Thankfully, we’ve got a tried and tested list just for you.
1.First things first – let’s have a brief
As we frequently experience for ourselves – no sign and poster printing job is the same. We cannot assume that our previous experience will carry us into our current project. We need a brief. Every time. The project must have an aim.
Who is the target audience, what is the absolute must-have information to be included, what is the primary message and what is the purpose of the poster?
Audience – Info – Message – Purpose
These words are a great starting point for gathering the principle elements that will go into the final product. You can ask yourself these questions, or take them to your client who will be thankful you have a good handle on where you’re going with their project.
2.A visual focus
Obviously, or sometimes not obvious to everybody involved, a poster is a visual tool. It is a focal point on which to convey a message. As such its point of focus will be used to best effect when simplified into a single visual cue. Here we can go to current graphic design trends for inspiration to see where we might cleverly communicate multiple elements of the brief by utilising a contemporary graphic device or motif. Think of graphics used in everyday apps, or how about a ‘Dark mode’ poster concept?
Combining a word, a phrase or motif with an overlapping image or graphic detail can convey the message succinctly and effectively. Simple can be so much better.
3.Attention-grabbing slam-dunk
More exclamation marks just won’t do it! Target your demographic instantly with bold colours and large-scale graphics to communicate only the essential theme and information required to fulfil its purpose. Keep variation to a minimum. Here you can take inspiration from the poster’s subject directly or look around at other graphic design trends hitting the tube station walls and billboards near you to keep it current.
4.It’s all in the detail
Indoor or outdoor poster printing requires that you take note of every detail of the printed poster, from simple colour pallets, final spelling and information checks. Everything has to be scrutinised in large format too, so for digital poster printing, pixel definition has to be spot on.
5.Font-tastic typefaces
The way that a poster is presented will have an element of style and fashion associated with it, and a distinctive typeface can carry with it much more than just the words themselves. Serif or sans? Think of the wild west, and we’re sure you’ll have a font in mind. What about an Hawaiian beach – have a font in mind again? Trends, styles and fashions merge seamlessly into everything we read and see around us. Get inspired!
