Top tips for creating effective business cards
Despite a more digital presence, business cards still hold a lot of weight in the business world and offer a sense of professionalism and integrity when it comes to any business. They offer up an initial point of contact as well as promotion for your business. If you haven’t got some, you might be missing out on potential leads so it’s worth considering your options. Creating your own business cards do, however, need careful consideration. You want to ensure your branding is echoed throughout all your marketing collateral and business cards are no different. We’ve pulled together our top tips for creating effective business cards below:
Include important information
The main purpose of a business card is to give customers a point of contact. So, make sure the information on the business card does just that. Include your name, company name, job title (if applicable), contact information – such as phone number, email, contact address, website, and social media.
Follow basic guidelines
It might seem like an obvious point to make, but many can forget about it with such a small piece of print. Nevertheless, it is just as important as any other piece to ensure you keep to the basic printing rules; minimum font size for legibility, CMYK print; 300dpi for images; 5mm margins from the edge of the trim for copy.
Brand guidelines
If you have strong brand colourways and guidelines, be sure to use them to create a sense of unity across all printed pieces. Ensure your logo is clear on the business card and marries up to your other printed designs and graphics.
Use both sides
Business cards are double-sided so try to use both sides to better utilise the space you have. Use one side for your logo or graphic and the other for the contact information. This allows you to put a greater emphasis on your business’ brand and create more effective business cards.
Get creative
Business cards are an insight into your business and your brand so make sure you are enticing people in effectively. Consider using different printing methods such as spot varnish or foil, or even embossing to create a point of difference.
Consider stock
You don’t want to waste your efforts on a design if the stock you choose is flimsy and doesn’t print well. Consider a strong and sturdy stock to allow your business brand to shine, and ensure your card will last for years to come when people go to get your contact information. A poorly chosen paper could cost you your business. You could even consider something a little different and print on plastic for better durability!
Proof read
It is especially important to proof check your card before it goes to print. The last thing you want is a typo – this can lead to a disconnect with people and customers may not consider your business if you cannot get something as simple and as important as a business card right.
