You Bought Canvas Prints Online – Here’s a Guide to Hanging Them
If you have bought canvas prints online and you would like to hang them in your home, it is a straightforward task provided you prepare properly. There are different options for doing so and you should choose the most appropriate method based on your custom canvas print size. Here are some basic guidelines to hanging your prints:
Take Care With Preparation
The first thing to consider when hanging your custom canvas prints is the actual size. A small canvas print can be easily hung and supported by a single nail and a saw tooth bracket, whereas large canvas prints are better hung using a hanging wire attached to the side of the frame. The wire can bear more weight and strain to provide greater stability. You must also consider the wall surface on which you are hanging your custom canvas prints. If they are constructed of brick or concrete then you will need to employ a drill to make secure holes, whereas if the wall is constructed of simple drywall, you will not need such ‘heavy duty’ tools.
To securely hang your canvas prints you will need a screwdriver, spirit level, pencil, hammer, measuring tape and nails. And perhaps consider some wall protection pads may be advisable to avoid wall marking or damage in the hanging process. Additional accessories such as screws, wire and eye hooks may be required depending upon the hanging technique being used.
Canvas Print Placement is Key
The next consideration is the placement of your canvas print – a general rule is to keep the picture at eye-level and at six inches above any furniture (for example, a bed or couch). Don’t rely on a visual estimation to determine an accurate eye-level – first measure the height of the picture and divide it in two to confirm the canvas centre. Add 57 to the canvas centre number which will determine where the top of the frame will need to be and mark it on the wall with a pencil.
Having established the proper positioning of the canvas print, ensure you clean the wall surface and move any furniture out of the way for safety and to avoid any accidental damage to the furniture itself. Get someone to act as an assistant to hand you the requisite tools and accessories at the appropriate times, and place wall pads onto the wooden canvas frame to prevent marking the wall.
Are Nails Suitable?
Using nails is the quickest and easiest way to hang your canvas prints. First ensure that the canvas size is appropriate for this method. Simply hammer a nail in the correct position on the wall leaving a third of the nail length exposed and place the top wooden bar of the canvas over the nail. Remember this method is only recommended for smaller canvas prints. Large canvas prints will require a sturdier mounting!
Using a Sawtooth Hanger
A small to medium sized canvas print will benefit from being supported by a sawtooth hanger. A similar method to already stated can be used. Simply mark the centre of top wooden frame panel, position the sawtooth hanger, and insert nails into the appropriate holes on either side of the hanger. Gently hammer the nails inside and simply place the frame, using the sawtooth hanger, over the nail in the wall.
Why Use Wire
Large canvas prints will require wire hanging to support the weight and hold it firmly in place. Screw eye hooks into either side of the frame at the correct measured height (approximately one third of the way down from the top of the canvas), then string the wire between the two hooks. Hammer a nail into the wall as with the other methods, then carefully place the centre of the wire over the protruding nail.
Hanging Strips and Adhesives
There are other hanging options to secure your custom canvas prints which will not mark your wall and so make changing or removing the canvases easier. Specialist hanging strips based on a Velcro type method are available as well as adhesive tapes – but ensure that that the picture hanging strips or adhesive that you buy will support the weight of the canvases you are intending to display. They are easy to use. Simply affix strips or tapes to each corner of the canvas and place against pre-measured markings on the wall where the canvas is to hang – firmly press the strips or adhesive against the wall and canvas to secure.
To check your canvas is hanging straight and true, place a round object on top of the canvas. If it rolls to one side then adjust the canvas accordingly and repeat the process. Or simply use a spirit level.
